Indoor vs Outdoor Swimming Pools: Which Is Right for Your Home?
Comparing the practical, financial and lifestyle considerations of indoor and outdoor swimming pools for residential projects in the UK.
The fundamental difference
The choice between an indoor and outdoor pool is fundamentally one of how and when you want to use it. An outdoor pool offers a strong connection to the garden and the enjoyment of summer, but limits the usable season in the UK climate. An indoor pool is available year-round and is not weather-dependent, but is a considerably more complex and expensive project.
Outdoor pools: advantages and considerations
Outdoor pools are the more common choice for UK residential projects, and for good reason. They are less expensive to construct, have a smaller planning footprint in most cases, can be beautifully integrated into a garden, and provide the connection to outdoor space and summer living that many homeowners are looking for.
The main limitation is the season. Even with a good quality heat pump and cover, an outdoor pool in the UK Midlands is realistically usable from May to October — approximately six months of the year. For homeowners who are at the property primarily during summer, or for whom the summer season is the most valued time to use a pool, this is perfectly acceptable.
Indoor pools: advantages and considerations
An indoor pool removes the seasonal constraint entirely. It can be used every day of the year, regardless of the weather, and provides a genuinely private and weatherproof environment for regular swimming, exercise and recreation.
The costs are significantly higher. The structural, ventilation and humidity management requirements of an indoor pool add considerably to the project cost compared with an outdoor equivalent. Planning permission is almost always required. The pool needs to be integrated carefully into the building, and the environmental systems need to be properly engineered to prevent moisture damage to the structure.
For homeowners who will use a pool regularly throughout the year, or for whom a pool is primarily about exercise and wellbeing rather than summer recreation, an indoor pool is often the right choice.
Cost comparison
Outdoor pools typically start at around £75,000 to £100,000 for a modest project and rise to £200,000 or more for a high-specification pool with full surrounds and a pool house.
Indoor pools typically start at £150,000 to £200,000 for a modest project housed in a purpose-built structure, and rise to £400,000 or more for a larger, premium pool integrated within or adjacent to the main house. The structure, ventilation systems and finishes all add significantly to the cost.
