Swimming Pool Running Costs Explained
A practical guide to the ongoing costs of owning a private swimming pool in the UK — heating, chemicals, maintenance, insurance and what you can do to keep them manageable.
What are the main running costs?
The main running costs for a private outdoor swimming pool in the UK are heating, chemicals, water, electricity (filtration pump), and ongoing maintenance and servicing. Insurance is an additional consideration that some homeowners overlook.
Heating costs
Heating is typically the largest ongoing cost for a private pool. The amount you spend depends primarily on the size of the pool, the target water temperature, the heating season, the efficiency of the heating system, and whether a quality pool cover is used.
A well-managed outdoor pool heated by a modern heat pump and covered when not in use might cost £1,500 to £3,500 per year in energy costs for a standard residential pool (approximately 8m x 4m) over a six-month season. A pool without a cover, or one heated to a higher temperature, will cost considerably more.
The pool cover: the most effective cost control
A quality pool cover is the single most effective way to reduce running costs. Overnight heat loss through an uncovered pool can be enormous. A well-fitted roller or automatic slatted cover can reduce heating costs by 50 to 70 per cent by preventing evaporative heat loss when the pool is not in use. The cover also reduces chemical consumption and keeps debris out of the water.
Chemical costs
Chemical costs for a pool managed by the homeowner typically run to £500 to £1,500 per year, depending on the pool volume, usage pattern, water source and chemical management approach. Pools with automatic dosing systems and UV or salt water treatment can reduce chemical consumption significantly.
Maintenance and servicing
Most pool owners contract an annual service visit to check equipment, inspect the structure, test water chemistry and carry out any necessary maintenance. Annual service contracts typically cost £300 to £800 depending on the extent of the service and the distance from the service provider.
Managing costs over the long term
Investing in the right equipment at the outset — an efficient heat pump, a quality cover, an automated dosing system — pays dividends over the long term. We are happy to discuss the cost implications of different equipment choices during the design and specification stage of any project.
