Heating, covers and finishes that make the difference
The details that determine how enjoyable and cost-effective a pool is to own and use. Getting the heating, cover and internal finish right from the outset avoids costly rectification later.
The details that determine how well a pool performs
A swimming pool is a significant investment. The heating system determines how warm and comfortable the water is, and how much it costs to maintain. The cover determines how much heat is lost overnight and how safe the pool is when not in use. The internal finish determines how the pool looks and feels, and how much ongoing maintenance it requires.
Valerian Pools specifies these elements carefully, selecting the right products and systems for each project rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
Pool heating options
Heat pumps are the most energy-efficient heating solution for most outdoor pools in the UK climate and represent the best choice for most new-build projects. Gas boilers offer faster heat-up times and are appropriate in some situations. Solar thermal can supplement other heating systems effectively. We assess the options for each project and recommend accordingly.
Pool covers
A quality pool cover is one of the most effective investments a pool owner can make. It dramatically reduces heat loss overnight, minimises chemical consumption, keeps debris out of the water, and provides an important safety barrier. Slatted covers, roller covers and automatic systems are all available, and we specify the right solution for each project.
Internal finishes — tile
Ceramic, porcelain and glass tiles offer the most durable and aesthetically versatile internal finish for a swimming pool. They are available in a wide range of colours, sizes and textures, and can be used to create a bespoke and highly refined internal appearance. Glass mosaic tiles in particular are popular for premium residential pools.
Internal finishes — aggregate and plaster
Aggregate and plaster finishes offer a softer, more natural appearance than tiled pools. They are typically less expensive than a full tile finish and are well-suited to pools where a more understated or natural aesthetic is desired. They require periodic renewal — typically every 10 to 15 years — depending on water chemistry and usage.
Filtration and water management
Modern filtration systems maintain water clarity and quality efficiently and with reduced chemical consumption. Salt water chlorination, UV treatment and automated dosing systems are all options that can reduce the hands-on maintenance burden for pool owners while maintaining excellent water quality.
